Opera in 1775
17 September 2025, 7.30pm – Cadogan Hall
Our ongoing MOZART 250 series continues with this unique exploration of the opera scene 250 years ago. In a programme which incorporates highlights from eight operas that were premièred during the course of 1775, Mozart’s Il re pastore is represented by two arias (including the justifiably celebrated “L’amerò, sarò costante”) and its exuberant finale, while we also include a plaintive tenor aria and an idyllic trio for three sopranos from Haydn’s so-called ‘Turkish’ opera.
Many of the extracts will be receiving their UK premières, and in addition to being delightful pieces in their own right they provide an intriguing context for Mozart’s own operatic growth. Highlights include exquisite arias by J. C. Bach and Mysliveček, two composers who exerted a particularly strong influence on the young Mozart, and the concert also includes first performances since the 18th century of arias from two operas that were commissioned alongside operas by Mozart himself.
