Giovanni Manzuoli (c.1720-82) was one of the most celebrated singers of his day, appearing in the premières of nearly fifty operas by composers ranging from Vivaldi to Mozart. Metastasio described him as “the idol” of Vienna, while Charles Burney called the applause he received in London “a universal thunder”.
It was during his stay in London for the 1764/65 season at the King’s Theatre, Haymarket that Manzuoli met the young Mozart, and he reportedly gave the young prodigy singing lessons during this time. Six years later, Manzuoli was persuaded out of retirement to create the title role in Mozart’s Ascanio in Alba.
This carefully curated programme presents a chronological journey through Manzuoli’s prestigious career, incorporating arias by Porpora, Galuppi, Piccinni, Gluck, J. C. Bach, Perez, Hasse and Mozart, as well as symphonies by Haydn and Abel. The soloist is the sensational young Swedish mezzo-soprano Rebecka Wallroth, who has been attracting outstanding notices as a member of the solo ensemble at the Berlin Staatsoper.
