‘Mozart: London-Sinfonie’ – Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival
22 July 2023 – St. Bartholomäus-Kirche, Wesselburen, Germany
Exploring Mozart’s childhood visit to London in 1764-5, this concert reveals a cross-section of music that was being written and performed in the English capital during the composer’s 15-month stay. A fascinating view emerges of what was at the time the largest and wealthiest city in the world – a city frequented by Dr Johnson and Horace Walpole, by David Garrick and William Pitt the Elder – and of the musical landscape that was to exert such a formative influence on Mozart’s own compositional style.
Alongside works by Thomas Arne, the ‘London’ Bach and the young Mozart himself, the programme features a range of delightful rarities by composers whose names are now long forgotten, and a selection of readings from Leopold Mozart’s letters and anecdotes from Mozart’s time helps to bring 1760s London to vibrant life.

“From the vast stores of forgotten scores from this period, Page has nosed out the very best… Bold yet highly sensitive, Page and his musicians show what makes this music great.”
